Avoid the Battery Blues

Smartphones are notorious for having a shorter than advertised phone battery life. The idea of getting through the day without the battery dying can be frustrating, especially if you use your phone for multiple tasks. Even though there are products out there that can extend your phone’s battery life – for example battery cases and portable chargers – there are simple tricks you can do on your phone to get as much life out of your battery as a possible.

Below are some examples to help improve your phone battery life

  • Turn your auto brightness setting on or turn the screen brightness down as low as you can with it still being usable
  • Turn off background app refresh
  • Turn off the GPS
  • Ensure your Bluetooth is off
  • Use your phone on mostly Wi-Fi
  • Turn 3G/4G off if you’re not using it

By doing these few things, you will stop your phone from using its battery to keep unnecessary resources in use. If you must have one or two apps refresh their information regularly or use GPS, you can adjust individual app settings accordingly. If you are like me, you probably have chargers in multiple locations: work, home, and in the car. However, if you follow these tips, you may not need those chargers as much.

Search Engine Privacy

‘To Google’ has become a verb meaning to search for something on the internet, and although Google has certainly cornered the market in search engine technology (in fact for a large number of people Google is the internet), it isn’t the only game in town. And for those who value search engine privacy and prefer not to have their search history or personal information collected, there is one option which stands out above all others: the weirdly named DuckDuckGo.

In a nutshell

  • The company has been around since 2008, so has had plenty of time to refine their search algorithms
  • DuckDuckGo does not track you
  • They don’t collect any personal information
  • Because of the above, they have nothing to share with third parties even if they wanted to
  • It sports a similar minimalist design to Google’s, and is equally easy to use

Don’t get me wrong, I think Google is great – it’s fast, efficient and by and large gives you just what you were looking for. But for the privacy-minded who prefer not to be tracked or have their search history saved, DuckDuckGo is a fantastic alternative.

Bookmark Sync

Bookmark Sync – Access Sites from Anywhere

Bookmark Sync

Take control of your bookmarks

With a plethora of information out there, keeping websites to access for later is an important skill. Bookmarking is simply saving a site like you would do a page in a book. It used to be that you bookmarked the website on one computer, and accessed the site on the same computer. Today, with smartphones and using computers in different places, bookmarking and accessing those bookmarks (or favorites) on one computer is not enough. Ideally you want to be able to access your bookmarks anytime on any device. Bookmark sync is the way forward, and thankfully there are a couple of really great ways to achieve this.

There are now several browser plug-ins that will sync your bookmarks across each of your devices. A plug-in is something you add to your Internet browser that either runs in the background, or has an icon that sits under your search bar that you hit when you want to use it. One such plug-in is called XMarks and is available for free for Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer.

This browser add-on and associated bookmarking technique has many benefits:

  • All your bookmarks are kept in sync across different computers and devices
  • Keeps your bookmarks safe and accessible online in case your computer crashes, you never lose your bookmarks
  • You can organize your bookmarks in folders
  • You can restore lost bookmarks
  • You can set up multiple profiles so you can save bookmarks in various ways or for multiple people
  • It works seamlessly without you having to think about it
  • Usually there is a smartphone app you can use to access the bookmarks

This bookmarking technique is great. It lets your bookmarks evolve with your changing interest and changing sites, while allowing you to keep them all organized and accessible anywhere.
